“Hello Sunshine” DIY Wood Sign

Hello Sunshine Sign
Hello Sunshine Sign
This was my first time attempting to distress and age a new piece of art to make it look old and weathered.  I love how it came out and it’s actually so easy!

Read on to find out how to make your own…

What You’ll Need:
A raw wood “sign”
Acrylic Paints
Foam and Regular Paintbrushes
Cardstock, for the stencil template
Silhouette Cameo or other Craft Cutter/Exacto Knife
Wood Stain (I used Minwax in Red Mahogany)
Tea (I used a black mixed tea)
Double Sided Tape
Fine Grit Sandpaper
Old Rag
Picture Hangers
First, I took a foam brush and did a thin coat of white on my sign.  I purposefully made it look streaky and thinner in some places than others.  I let it dry a few hours.

Then I cut out the “Hello Sunshine” design on cardstock.  I tried contact paper but it was a huge fail.  I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut this out but you could simply print your phrase on the cardstock and cut with a sharp exacto knife too.  I used little pieces of doubled sided tape to hold the stencil in place, especially for the letter centers.

Then I gently dabbed on my colors to fill the stencil.  Keep the paint coverage really light and just dab at the stencil so your paint doesn’t bleed.  I decided not to paint that extra heart you see in the pictures.

When it’s dry to touch, you can pull off your stencil.  Allow to dry overnight.

Take fine grit sandpaper and gently rub the surface and edges to begin the distressing process.

Now, brew a really strong cup of tea.  I used four tea bags and let it steep about an hour.  Then use a brush to cover the sign in tea.  Allow to sit a few minutes and wipe clean with a rag.  I repeated this process twice to get a bit darker hue.

Then I took my stain and a small paint brush and began to brush the edges of my sign.  Using my rag, I rubbed immediately across the whole sign at random until I was happy with the coverage and “aged” look.

After it dried, I simply attached a picture hanger to the back of the sign.

And there you have it!  A fun new “old” sign.
