This picture is a freshly printed Orientation Schedule and Program Guide. I’m 31 years old and I’m going back to school…again. I actually like school. It’s just that I already have a lot on my plate as it is…a house to keep up, 3 small kids, and blogging, among other things! So going back to school will require some serious time management skills. And a lot of coffee.
A few months ago when I wanted to re-design my blog and move it to WordPress, I started looking around for a designer with a reasonable fee. And there are several, but they were ALL booked! I obviously love the design aspect and I know a decent amount of HTML (or enough to be dangerous anyway). So I ended up moving my whole blog and all the old posts over by myself and then doing all the design parts too. It got me thinking that maybe it’s something I can get into, because I really enjoy it. How nice it would be to do something I enjoy and earn a real paycheck again? (Blogging doesn’t really pay much for the record…it barely covers an occasional pack of diapers or two.) And if these designers are all booked up then business must be good. So I looked into Graphic and Web Design programs and then brought it up to my husband. To my surprise, he was all for it. Maybe he only heard the “paycheck again” part. 🙂
I already have my Bachelors (in English) and my MBA (in HR Management) and we pay far too much each month on my student loans so I was hesitant to say, “Honey, I want to go back to school”. The problem is, my degrees don’t allow for a mobile career and we move every 3ish years. Long story short, I’m able to use part of my husband’s Post-911 GI bill to cover school so I’m officially going to be a student once again on January 1.
I’m going for an Advanced Certificate in Graphic Design with a Web Design Concentration. I’m going part time and it will take me 15 months. So as I get into a new routine, I may cut blogging back to 3 days a week or so (I hope to at minimum continue to post Meal Plan Monday, a new recipe, and a new tutorial each week). And 15 months from now, I’m hoping I can be back to blogging full time and offering my new skills and services on the blog (or working virtually for a Graphic Design company)!
It’s actually going to be great for blogging too because I’ll get and learn programs like Photoshop, Illustator, and InDesign. There’s also courses like Typography in my program which sounds fun to me! And thankfully, my brother is a computer guy so I can always call him for help when I get to the Web Design courses like HTML and CSS. To me, learning real computer coding is like learning a foreign language.
So wish me luck and bear with me as I adjust to a new schedule and fitting coursework into my busy, busy days!
