Let’s start with a little video tour of my dining room so you can really see how this thing sparkles! (Ignore the sounds of my kids as background noise!)
While I was working on this project, I took over our whole counter for 2 days. My husband was more than a little scared of all the glitter so I was surprised today when he come home and I had the final product displayed and he was like, “Hey, that’s pretty cool actually”. I love walking by it during the day and it just shimmers away, especially when the sun catches it.
The table runner was from my Thanksgiving Tablescape. It’s bamboo and I snagged it for just $8 a Walmart last month. First I tried mixing the glitter into the Mod Podge and painting it on the whole table runner. Not nearly enough sparkle so I hit the store for a GIANT thing of gold glitter and another container of Mod Podge. I used an entire thing of Mod Podge on this and half of the huge glitter container.
But I LOVE the end result. And it was so easy too…
What You’ll Need:
- Bamboo Table Runner
- A butt-load of gold glitter (I used 1/2 a pound of glitter!)
- Mod Podge (a whole container)
- A paintbrush (Ignore the foam brush in the pic. A paintbrush worked so much better.)
First I covered my counter with wax paper and then laid out the table runner. Working in 6″ or so sections, I brushed it generously with Mod Podge and then generously sprinkled with glitter. As I worked, I shook excess glitter down to the next section and added more as needed. When complete, I allowed it to dry overnight.
The next morning, I applied another coat of Mod Podge and allowed several hours to dry. I hoped this extra coat would minimize glitter shedding (and it worked!) Then I carefully took it outside to shake off any excess glitter and peeled off the wax paper from the back. There were some soggy Mod Podge spots underneath so I balanced it on it’s side and allowed it to fully dry.
Then I laid it out on my table and it’s just how I envisioned it! You don’t need much on your table because the runner is the star of the show for sure. 🙂
To jazz up my chandelier, I simply hung a bunch of ornaments from it. Some are hung using gold embroidery thread and some are hung with fancy gold ornament hangers. All things I had in the Christmas boxes.
