The Incredible Hulk (My Kids' Favorite Green Smoothie)

If your kids are anything like mine, they turn their nose up at all things green at first. Thankfully, after many tries, they love a few green veggies: broccoli, peas, and  kale chips. Green smoothies weren’t a big hit until this recipe (even when I’d try to hide the color in an opaque cup). But I finally got the mix right and this one they slurp right down and ask for all the time! I think sweetening it up with the organic coconut palm sugar was key in getting the milkshake-like taste.

These smoothie straws are great for thicker drinks like smoothies and they even fit through the lids of their Tervis Tumblers (shown above with the lids yet).

I often buy the big bags of over-ripe bananas at the grocery and chop them up and freeze them in snack sized Ziploc bags. If you use frozen bananas, you may need a bit more milk to thin it out to desired consistency.

Ingredients:

  • 1 packed cup organic spinach
  • 4-5 frozen organic strawberries
  • 1 cup organic whole milk
  • ½ cup Strawberry-Banana Kefir (a probiotic yogurt drink found in the dairy section)
  • 2 over-ripe bananas
  • 2 tsp Chia Seed (one bag lasts us quite a while)
  • 2 tsp Ground Flax Seed (flax seed must be kept refrigerated once opened)
  • 1-2 tbsp Organic Coconut Palm Sugar (I started with 2 tbsp and gradually decreased it as they got used to the taste of the green smoothies!)

Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender until smoothie and serve promptly. We use and love the NutriBullet.
