6 Ways to Harness the Power of Pinterest
Pinterest can be a massive source of traffic for creative bloggers. Nearly 90% of my social traffic and 30% of my total traffic is from Pinterest. As you can see, it’s well worth investing your time into using Pinterest to grow your blog as a business.
While page views aren’t everything, they’re a blogging measurement that affects things such as blog income from ads and how much you get paid for sponsored work.
The below graphic shows you that Pinterest is my second biggest source of traffic over on my main site, Dawn Nicole Designs.

Using SEO on Pinterest
While many things online lump Pinterest into social media, it isn’t! Pinterest is a search engine. As such, many of the SEO principles we learned in lesson five come into play. The main thing to know is that using keywords and phrases related to your niche on Pinterest is essential.
Main Places to add keywords:
- Your Pinterest Profile (mine is shown below)
- Board Names
- Board Descriptions
- Pin Titles
- Pin Descriptions
Educate Yourself: Pinterest Facts
Educating yourself on the platform you’re using can be extremely helpful when you’re developing a game plan. Here are a few Pinterest facts I think are important to know:
- Pinterest has over 200 million users.
- 70% of users are female.
- 66% of the female users are age 25-54.
- 80% of users are using Pinterest on mobile devices.
- There are over 100 Billion Pins on Pinterest.
- 50% of Pinterest users are International (outside the US).
- 60% of Pinterest users have children age 5 or under.
- 40% of Pinterest users have a household income of $100K+.
- Studies show the “half-life” of a single Pin is about 3.5 months!
Basic Pinterest Setup Tips
Set up a Business Profile
Since you’re blogging as a business, using a Business Profile Pinterest account makes good sense. See how to get set up as a Business Account here.
Claim Your Website
Once you do this, Pins that come from your blog will have your profile picture next to them. You’ll also get access to analytics so you can check out what people are saving from your website. You can read about how to claim your website here.
Enable Rich Pins
Rich Pins show a title on your pin that will be there regardless of what text people add when they pin from your site. Read more about what rich pins are and how to set them up here.
Creating New Boards
When creating a new Pinterest board, be sure to add a description, set a cover photo, and add at least 10-12 pins to start it off on the right foot.
Create Pinterest-Friendly Graphics
Long images do best on Pinterest. If you’re not creating a Pinterest-friendly graphic for your blog posts, it’s a missed opportunity.
Because long pins take up more valuable real estate on Pinterest than square or horizontal images, they get more action! I place mine at the top of my post, but you can put it middle, end or wherever you prefer. There’s even code you can add to “hide” it from actually showing up in your post.
- I make most of my long pins for my main blog one of the following sizes: 600×900, 600×1200, or 600×1500.
- For this blog, my pinnable image is about 600×900.
- Pins that are too long get cut off.
Use the power of Pinnable Graphics for more than just your blog posts. Create long pinnable images to drive traffic to your Instagram, shop listings, email list, and more.
How to upload a pin:
- To save an image from your computer:
- Click the + at the top right corner of Pinterest and click Upload a Pin
- Click Upload Image and find the file on your computer
- Add the destination URL
- Pick a board for your Pin and add a description
- Click Save
Develop a Pinterest Strategy
Creating and implementing a Pinterest strategy is what will set you apart from the competition. Pinning at random won’t get you results. A solid plan will. And it doesn’t take a lot of time, either. My use of Pinterest is largely automated via a scheduling service called Tailwind.
I used to use Board Booster as well and it has some fabulous features, but Tailwind is Pinterest approved and Board Booster isn’t so that’s the main reason I now exclusively use Tailwind. With Tailwind, I do two main types of pin campaigns for my own content: (1) New Post Campaign (2) Maintenance Campaign.

The general consensus is that pinning about 15-30 times a day yields the best results.
Most reputable sources say there’s not a clear advantage to live pinning vs. scheduled pinning. Pinning consistency and great images appear to be of more importance. I live pin when I can but I don’t stress about it.
New Blog Post Campaigns
Every time I have a new post go live on my blog, I use Tailwind to schedule it to a Pin Campaign. Since you can set up board lists in Tailwind, it’s super easy to just click the pin campaign you want to use and it will auto apply all the boards. Just set the time/day intervals and you’re good to go!

Once you have a decent amount of content on your site, start implementing a maintenance pinning plan.
I have my VA (virtual assistant) schedule a daily pin campaign for my top 30 trafficked URLs, pulled from Google Analytics. I have a Board List set up for Monthly Pinning to make this easy for my VA to do.
To pull this data, log into Google Analytics. Set your date range to “last 30 days”. Click Acquisition from the left-hand menu bar. From the submenu click Social>Overview. At the bottom right of the screen, you can change the number of rows that show. Since I need at least 30, I choose to show 50 rows. Then I export the data to a Google Sheet so I can share it with my VA.
I’ll show you this in a video so it’s a bit easier to understand.
It used to be that using hashtags on Pinterest wasn’t recommend. Recently that has changed. I use several hashtags on most of my pins. Read more about Using Hashtags on Pinterest.
I don’t currently do this a ton right but I wanted to be sure to mention that if you use affiliate pins on Pinterest, be sure to disclose them properly with #AD at the beginning fo the Pin Description.
Use Tailwind Tribes. They rock!
Group boards used to be the holy grail of Pinterest. Getting on big group boards was a great way to grow. But Pinterest has changed how it’s feed works over the years. For today’s users who utilize Pinterest for their businesses, I think that Tailwind Tribes are the new group boards.
In a nutshell, you join a tribe and add your pins to it. Everyone in the tribe pins your content to their boards. You’re helping each other promote blog content. My in-niche tribe gets amazing reach!
