My husband loves browsing Craigslist, and lately it has been to my benefit! First, he found this old Tea Cart I made over and earlier this week he found this Antique Hutch for $100 (the former owner’s paid almost $300). We’ve been wanting to give the kid’s playroom (which is technically the dining room) a more grown-up looking makeover since it’s on the main floor of the house. Without proper storage, toys are always all over the main floor of the house. Not anymore! The playroom is crazy organized now (I’m still working on the room so I’ll show the whole room when it’s done!). I threw out about 3 bags worth of old/broken/cheap toys which certainly helped too.
The piece just barely fit in the back of the minivan. Minivans rock. Try to ignore all the crumbs and sucker sticks you can see on the floor. I do.
The piece, although in need of re-painting and a corner we had to patch with wood putty, was in great shape. Pardon the quality of the following “before” pics…it was late at night and I painted in the family room while drinking wine and watching “The Voice” and “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Reunion” (over big sheets of cardboard to protect the carpet of course).
I started by painting the whole piece in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (ASCP) Old Ochre which was about a shade darker than the hutch’s original color. When dry, I painted the inside of the back and the middle of the detail designs in Provence. The black is a color called Graphite. This is a shot after I had used sandpaper to distress the piece and “age” the Graphite color areas.
Then I applied a coat of ASCP clear wax and allowed it to dry overnight. I found some ceramic knobs perfect for the piece at World Market. I can’t believe how well the blues match.
Then we moved it to the playroom and filled it up!
The two bins inside and the two wicker bins on the outside are all from Target (clearance finds! Whohoo!).
To find ASCP near you, visit the Annie Sloan site to find a stockist. (This post is not sponsored, I’m just a big fan of the paint).
Now, who’s off to search Craigslist?! 🙂
