Black & White Halloween Mantel. A simple and spooky mantel inspired by my love of books, creatures of the night, and Halloween.
Black & White Halloween Mantel
As a Halloween baby, it’s basically my birthright to go all out for Halloween. It’s in my blood to have a fun fascination with the creatures of the night: witches, vampires, and werewolves!
While I know they aren’t real; I’ve always loved movies and books with these themes.
Hocus Pocus and The Monster Squad are two of my favorite Halloween movies of all time. And I’ve been watching The Vampire Diaries again on Netflix the past few weeks. #TeamDelena
Elements of all of these things inspired my mantel this year!
Creating a Festive Mantel
Any time I create a mantel, I like to start by “shopping” from around my home. I go from room to room borrowing anything that fits my theme.
I wanted this creepy mante to fit in with our usual decor, so I opted for a black and white color palette.
Nearly everything you see was pulled from Halloween bins or other rooms of the house.
I only spent around $20 for a few extras!
“Shopping” From Home
I started by pulling down the large wood map that usually hangs above the mantel and clearing the shelf.
The wall clock that usually hangs in our hallway seemed like a great starting point, so I hung that first.
Then I started pilling up books from my collection, opting for hardcovers that were black, white, or gray.
In our Halloween bins, I grabbed the bone garland, stacked books with the skull, little glitter trees, and the open spellbooks with the skeleton hands. That is broken in half, but I just used the garland to hide the crack!
Before
This is what this space looks like on a typical day.
After
And here are more pics and details on the Halloween-ified version.
The little clock is from IKEA and was hiding a drawer in my bedroom.
The skinny candlesticks are always on the mantel and the big chunky ones I borrowed from our upstairs loft.
The cool brown diary with the key is a journal I bought at a Medival Fest when we lived in Germany. It was just in a bin in my office, as was the looking glass with the striped handle. I think I bought that at Target a while back to use as a photo prop.
It’s incredible how much you can pull together just from shopping in your own home!
I had to include an ampersand, of course! They’re kind my signature “thing.”
I added a few open books to add to the somewhat manic, mystical, witchy vibe.
Halloween Mantel: Things I Bought
After I finished with what I had on hand, I stood back to see what I felt like was missing. There were two things I thought it HAD to have!
The bats are so cute and easy to stick up. They’re a thin plastic material, so I’ll be able to use them again next year.
I also added the black veil to my tables on either side of the fireplace.
The striped ceramic pumpkin is one of my favorite things. It’s from Hobby Lobby, but it’s a few years old.
Pretty creeptastic, right? I want to leave it up all year, ha!
