If you’ve followed me awhile, you know how much I love certain things like creating vintage-y wood signs, typography, Chalk Paint and my Silhouette CAMEO.
While I was attaching the wire hanger, I randomly thought it would be fun to thread buttons on and I just happened to have some bright colored ones that matched the painted I used perfectly! It’s part of the playroom, which I’m working on re-doing and brightening up with a lot of color.
This pic is blurry but the lightening in this room makes it so hard to get a good picture!
Want to make your own?
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 12″x48″ piece of pine wood, cut in half (so that your sign is 12″x24″)
- Chalk Paint and/or Acrylic Paint
- Vinyl for Stenciling and transfer tape
- Silhouette CAMEO (to make the stencil)
- Spouncers and a thin paintbrush
- Picture wire and hangers (pictured up close below)
After you’ve cut the wood, sand the edges where you cut. Then cover the sign in a coat of white paint. When that’s dry, do a coat of black lightly, letting the white show through in places to create a worn look. (I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Graphite for the black).
Next, I got to work choosing playful fonts and laying out my design in the Silhouette software. The “COLOR” font is called MTF Jumpin Jack by Miss Tiina Fonts and the “outside the lines” font is Elise by Kevin and Amanda.
I let the sign dry at least 24 hours at this point because I don’t want to risk the stencils pulling up any paint. Next, I cut the vinyl with my Silhouette Cameo and applied it to the wood with transfer tape. I used spongers to lightly apply paint to all the text and then carefully peeled off the vinyl while the paint is still wet (don’t let it dry too much or it will pull up with the vinyl).
Then I took a small paint brush and add the loopy line on the end of “outside the lines”.
Finally, I put the hook screws (no idea what the technical term for these little guys is!) and wrapped wire picture hanger on one side and threaded on the buttons and then secured the wire on the other hanger.
And that’s it! A fun, colorful sign with a great message that’s perfect for a playroom, school room or even your own craft area!
This is also available in my Etsy shop as an instant download print you can print and frame yourself! (If you can’t find it, it’s just sold out, so just message me and I can re-list it!) 🙂
