Feminine Floral Art Journal Page Tutorial
Hi everyone! It’s Torrie again, from Fox & Hazel, and I have a fun & fast art journal page for you! Sometimes I want to create a page, but find myself feeling uninspired or not sure what direction to go. Often when I’m feeling this way, I’ll rely on magazine images to help inspire me to make a page. It’s an easy way to make something beautiful when you’re feeling stumped!
First we’ll need to round up the supplies we’ll be using:
- art journal (I’m using a Canson XL Mixed Media Sketchbook)
- white gesso
- acrylic paint in Portrait Pink, Light Violet and gold (not shown). I’m using Artist’s Loft and Liquitex, but you can also use craft acrylics.
- fashion magazine
- bubble wrap
- Uni Posca Paint Pens, fine tips, in white, pink, light blue and light purple
- glue runner tape
- an old credit/gift card you aren’t using
- heat tool (not pictured)
Awesome! Now let’s get making!
Step one: I’m going to use that old credit card, or in my case an old Starbucks card, to spread some paint on the pages and build up layers. First, I put down some pink paint. Then used the credit card to scrape the paint across the page. I repeated this all over the page until I was happy with it. I used a heat tool on my pages to help the paint dry faster. As you can see, I have a super luxurious deluxe one! It makes all my projects feel fancy. This is also when I realized I forgot to put a protector behind my page. I use whatever scrap paper I can find, which this time happens to be an old envelope.
Step Two: I just copied step one with the light violet paint and dried it! Then I repeated with a layer of gesso. Super easy. The gesso helps tone down the bright colours, adds more layers, and creates more texture to the background.
Step Three: Next, I added some more texture with the gold paint and bubble wrap. I used a paint brush to apply an even layer of paint to the bubble wrap, then gently pressed it onto the page. I added it in spots all over without reapplying the paint to get different effects.
Step Four: Next, I grabbed my fashion magazine, like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, etc, and choose an image to cut out. The bigger, the better. I found this image of two girls that seemed so light and airy that I loved it. I used the glue runner tape to glue it down. I highly recommend glue runner tape for art journaling, especially for thin papers like this. The glue tape doesn’t warp or buckle the paper like glue sticks or matte medium would.
Step Five: Using the Posca Paint Markets, I went and added some details to the image. I added head jewerly and a flower crown to the girls, and some flowers in their hair. I didn’t like that you could see the script from the original ad, so I added a floral motif to cover up the writing. I also added the words “…and she wore flowers in her hair…” to the page as well. It’s a bit hard to see.
Step Six: I went back with the gold paint and bubble wrap to add just a tiny bit more texture over top of the magazine images. It’s pretty faint, so it’s hard to see in the photos
See how easy that is? It makes for a fast page that still has visual interest and can get your creative juices flowing. Sometimes the easiest pages are the ones that kickstart your need to create and don’t take a ton of brain power.
