Hand Lettering Inspiration: Part Five. I’m sharing all my lettering challenge work from this month, along with some lettering tips and my color palettes!
Hand Lettering Inspiration: Part Five
It’s once again time to share my 2020 Lettering Challenge lettering work for the past month.
As per usual, I’ll be sharing a summary of my work, along with notes on my process, some lettering tips, and the color palettes I used for each piece.
Missed the first four months? You can check them out below.

Insta-Inspo + Procreate Tips
On my Instagram, almost all of my posts include a “Swipe to watch the process video,” which shows you how I take things from a sketch to a final piece.
You can check out my iPad Lettering in Procreate tips over on this page on the blog. I used a lot of the tutorials I’ve shared on that page in my lettering pieces below.
I hope that you’ll use the palettes and my work to inspire your own. Just remember, there’s a fine line between being inspired by someone else’s work and being a copycat, so be sure to create your own work!

Using the Color Palettes
- Right-click or screenshot the photos in the blog post to save each lettering example and color palette.
- Learn How to set up Custom Color Palettes in Procreate here.
- Use them in design programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Match your physical art supplies (markers, color pencils, watercolors, etc.) to the palette and work the old school way!
Hand Lettering Inspiration: Part Five | May Prompts
Here are my pieces from the May Challenge Prompts.
PIECE ONE
Prompt: “Always had high, high hopes.” -Panic! at the Disco
For this prompt, I wanted to challenge myself to use a circus-inspired style of lettering.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Try using a style of lettering you’ve never done before.
- I used grid stamps to help me layout this piece. Try using grid and layout stamps to see how they streamline your workflow! See below for more info. Head to my IG and swipe to see the process video for this piece. You’ll see the grid in use (and you can see them in the background of the above photo).
✒️ This piece was inspired by Circus style lettering and posters. I created it with a variety of my Procreate Brushes + Stamps; I also used several grid stamps from the Lettering + Grid Builder Bundle. All are available over in my Lettering Shop.
PIECE TWO
Prompt: “I’m a sucker for you.” -The Jonas Brothers
For this prompt, I wanted to challenge myself to create realistic-looking marquee-style lettering.
Pop over to my Instagram to see how I turned this lettering into a simple but fun GIF.
Level Up Your Lettering
This style is also the basis of my in-the-works first Procreate Online Lettering Class, which so many of you have been asking for for a long time now.
I have the outline and Procreate brushes all done, but it will take some time to create the worksheets, downloads, and bonus content…plus do the filming and editing. I’m super excited to get it out to you, but I also don’t want to rush it because I want to make sure it’s an excellent resource for you!
I’m a massive fan of project-based learning. Which just means we’ll do a full lettering piece together from start to finish.
It’s a fun way to learn Procreate and lettering techniques at the same time, so this will be the first of what I hope are many affordable step-by-step Procreate classes I create for you.
✒️ Created with a variety of my Procreate Brushes + Stamps (some are new ones that will be included in the class when it launches).
PIECE THREE
Prompt: “Sing to me the song of the stars.” -Mandy Moore
For this prompt, I wanted to challenge myself to create some lettering with unique serifs.
Level Up Your Lettering
- This piece is a total redo of one I did three years ago. Trying re-doing in an old piece in a new style to see how far you’re skills have come over the years (or even months).
- Try using simple lines and shapes to fill in the space around your lettering to add extra interest to the piece.
✒️ I used the DND Monoline Brush and various stamps from my Procreate Brush Bundles for this piece.
PIECE FOUR
Prompt: “Got a pocketful of sunshine” -Natasha Bedingfield
For this prompt, I wanted to challenge myself to add illustrations and create lettering that evoked a sense of sunshine-y joy.

LEARN TO LOVE SKETCHING!!
- If you’re struggling with layouts, sketching is absolutely essential. Your sketches don’t have to be pretty. They’re called rough sketches for a reason. 😉
- Usually, I’m an advocate of quality over quantity. But when it comes to sketching, it’s the opposite. It’s more important to focus on getting a bunch of ideas on paper.
- In design school, we had to fill a full page with a minimum of 5-10 layout ideas. To this day, I start all my lettering pieces with sketches.
- Some sketches are total crap, but one or two usually pop off the page. Those are the one(s) worth refining and completing.
- I settled on a sketch to flesh out, but, as you can see, this piece is still a work in progress!
✒️ I used the DND Monoline Brush, DND Tropical Block(ish) Brush, DND Celestial Block Brush from my Procreate Brush Bundles for this piece.
PIECE FIVE
Prompt: Wild Card Week. For this prompt, I re-colored a piece I did last year.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Try beveled lettering. That’s what I used in this piece, and it’s so much fun!
- Make your own GIF. Pop over to IG to see how I turned this one into a super colorful GIF.
✒️ I used the DND Monoline Brush my Procreate Brush Bundles for this piece.
