Hand Lettering Inspiration: Part Four
It’s time to share my 2020 Lettering Challenge lettering work for the past month.
I’m sharing a summary of my work, along with notes on my process, some lettering tips, and the color palettes I used for each piece.
Missed the first three months? You can check them out below.

Insta-Inspo + Procreate Tips
On my Instagram, almost all of my posts include a “Swipe to watch the process video,” which shows you how I take things from a sketch to a final piece.
You can check out my iPad Lettering in Procreate tips over on this page on the blog. I used a lot of the tutorials I’ve shared on that page in my lettering pieces below.
I hope that you’ll use the palettes and my work to inspire your own. Just remember, there’s a fine line between being inspired by someone else’s work and being a copycat, so be sure to create your own work!

- Learn How to set up Custom Color Palettes in Procreate here.
- Use them in design programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Match your physical art supplies (markers, color pencils, watercolors, etc.) to the palette and work the old school way!
Hand Lettering Inspiration: Part FOUR | APRIL Prompts
Here are my pieces from the April Challenge Prompts.
PIECE ONE
Prompt: “You only see what I reveal.” -Gavin DeGraw.
For this prompt, I wanted to challenge myself to use a ton of botanical illustrations.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Try filling in all the space around your lettering with illustrations.
- I used stamps from several of my Procreate Brush sets for this piece. Try using stamps to see how they streamline your workflow!
✒️ I used the DND Celestial Block Brush, DND Chalky Brush, DND Gradient brush, DND Monoline Brush, and various Floral and Celestial stamps from my Procreate Brush Bundles for this piece.
PIECE TWO
Prompt: “I needed to lose you to find me.” -Selena Gomez
For this prompt, I wanted to focus on using one lettering style and one type of illustration and still make an aesthetically pleasing piece.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Try using just one style of lettering for your piece.
- Then, focus on filling in all the space around your lettering with just ONE illustration. I used a single leaf in various colors.
✒️ I used the DND Tropical Blockish Brush and one Tropical Leaf stamp from my Tropical Vibes Procreate Brush Bundle for this piece.
PIECE THREE
Prompt: “Ain’t it hard keeping it so hardcore?” -Bradley Cooper + Lady Gaga
For this prompt, I wanted to challenge myself to use flourishing in my calligraphy and surround it with a bunch ton of floral and botanical illustrations.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Practice flourishing. Sketching is key to not overdoing your flourishes. Check out my original sketch for this piece above.
- Try focusing on adding floral illustrations to your piece. It’s totally ok to use one floral over and over. That’s what I did in this piece. I drew one Magnolia flower and added interest simply by varying its size and direction!
✒️ I used the DND Basic Brush and various Floral stamps for the leaves and small florals. All of these are from my Procreate Brush Bundles.
Piece Four
This week was a wild card week.
I chose to do the lyric “Something worth saving” by Gavin DeGraw.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Try mixing unlikely styles. I mixed watercolor calligraphy with chalkboard art in this piece.
- Add super simple flourishes to basic calligraphy. Oftentimes, less is more!
✒️ I used the DND Calligraphy Crayon Brush, DND Monoline Coloring Brush, and various stamps from my Procreate Brush Bundles for this piece.
