Hand Lettering Inspiration: Part Three. I’m sharing all my lettering challenge work from this month, along with some lettering tips and my color palettes!
Hand Lettering Inspiration: Part Three
Just as with past months of the 2020 Lettering Challenge inspiration posts, I’m sharing a summary of my work from month three, along with notes on my process, some lettering tips, and the color palettes I used for each piece.
Missed the first two months? You can check them out below.
Insta-Inspo + Procreate Tips
On my Instagram, almost all of my posts include a “Swipe to watch the process video,” which shows you how I take things from a sketch to a final piece.
You can check out my iPad Lettering in Procreate tips over on this page on the blog. I used a lot of the tutorials I’ve shared on that page in my lettering pieces below.
I hope that you’ll use the palettes and my work to inspire your own. Just remember, there’s a fine line between being inspired by someone else’s work and being a copycat, so be sure to create your own work!

Hand Lettering Inspiration: Part Three | March Prompts
Here are my five pieces from the March Challenge Prompts.
Piece One: 3D SERIF Lettering
Prompt: “I dare you to move.” -Switchfoot
For this prompt, I wanted to keep the focus on the serif style. I keep the I DARE YOU in all caps for emphasis. 3D is a super-easy way to add more style and interest to your lettering.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Try getting creative with serif style lettering.
- Check out my post on 3D Lettering in Procreate.
✒️ I used the DND Monoline Brushes, and the DND Celestial Block brushes from my Procreate Brush Bundles for this piece.
PIECE TWO: ADDING FLORAL AND BOTANICAL ELEMENTS
Prompt: “Look up child” – Lauren Daigle
For this prompt, I wanted to challenge myself to use a ton of floral and botanical illustrations.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Try filling in all the space around your lettering with illustrations.
- I shared a tutorial for the exact florals I used in this post: Easy Floral Procreate Illustration Tutorial (written + video)! Learn how to create this easy flower drawing in Procreate in just a few steps.
✒️ I used the DND Celestial Block Brush, DND Gradient brush, DND Monoline Brush, and various Floral stamps from my Procreate Brush Bundles for this piece.
Piece THREE: BEHIND THE SCENES
Prompt: “Whatever it takes.” – Imagine Dragons
This week, I decided to show you a bit more behind the scenes of what goes into a piece instead of the finished work.
A whole LOT of sketching!
I usually fill a full page, and one will jump out at me as “the one” to go with. In graphic design school, we HAD to do this step and submit our sketches as proof. It’s stuck with me ever since.
And as much as I love working in Procreate on my iPad, I always do my sketching with a pencil and Rhodia Dot Pad.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Try sketching out a minimum of three layouts for a piece. Pick your favorite to take to completion.
- If you do a ton of work on your iPad, trying sketching on paper. I find it so much easier to flesh my ideas out the old school analog way.
✒️ I used a wide variety of my Procreate Brush Bundles for all of these pieces.
Piece FOUR: VINTAGE VIBES
Prompt: “Hey look Ma, I made it.” – Panic! at the Disco
Vintage textures and (more) serif letters were my inspiration for this prompt.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Use textures to add more depth to your work. It can be on the letters themselves, the background, or a bit of both.
- Be careful not to overdo it. Less is usually more with textures!
✒️ I used a DND Monoline Brushes of my Procreate Brush Bundles for this one, along with some of Procreate’s standard vintage texture brushes.
Piece FIVE: fun with the 1970s
Prompt: “You wanna piece of me?” – Britney Spears
I love the fun lettering styles of the 1970s, and that was my main inspiration for this piece.
Level Up Your Lettering
- Pick a decade and study up on the lettering styles of the period. Use it as inspiration for your piece.
- Check out my post on 10 Lettering Books for Inspiration. It includes several decades-based books I have and recommend.
✒️ I used a DND Monoline Brushes of my Procreate Brush Bundles.
