Passion Project: Dawn Nicole at Home. A new series on the blog that will chronicle my creative passion projects, centered around making home our happy place.
Passion Project: Dawn Nicole at Home
Confession: I’ve been feeling a little lost this year. Maybe it’s the fact that we’ve uprooted our lives and moved for what feels like the hundredth time. With every move, comes the challenge of making our new location feel like home: new friends, new roads, new doctors, new church, new country, etc.
I’m not complaining. Being a military family means we get to experience a lot of things and places we wouldn’t otherwise. I’m grateful for those opportunities and honored to serve my country in some small way. But it isn’t always easy.
When we moved from Germany back to Charleston, SC, I supposed I expected it to be all rainbows and sunshine. Charleston is my absolute favorite city to live in, and we bought a house (built a home!) for the first time in nearly a decade. With moving so often, renting just made more sense. My husband and I would reminisce about how much fun we had doing DIY projects, and in the first home we bought (11 years ago when we first got married).
So since I’m in my dream location in a dreamy new home, I couldn’t understand why I felt so unsettled. I’m still not entirely sure, but I think it has something to do with working too much and not having a creative outlet.
That sounds weird since my job is creative, but I mean a creative outlet that is just for fun. I’ve found great joy in making the new house a home. I’m an amateur decorator, but I have so much fun harnessing my inner Joanna Gaines and decorating a space.
This is a bit dark, but I also think that getting closer to the age my dad was when he passed away from stomach cancer at 43 has me feeling the need to intentionally focus more on the things that truly matter in life, which includes spending time not working. (I turn 37 on Halloween.) I tend to be a bit of a workaholic because I love my job.
So, I ultimately decided to start a passion project and share it with you. Dawn Nicole at Home seemed like the perfect name since I’m a hermit level homebody. Home is my happy place. It’s where I feel safe and can be introverted to my heart’s content. It’s kind of like inviting all of you, my sweet internet friends, to come over for a coffee and chat.
These posts will be a bit more personal than what I usually share on the blog, and my focus here will still be on creating Hand Lettering content to share with you. After eight years of blogging here, I feel like it is time to let you all into my life a bit more.
What is a Passion Project?
I love how The Passion Co. defines it:
Passion Projects are creative side projects. They’re connected to your deeper meaning and they have tangible outcomes. Anyone can do them. What you need most is inspiration and commitment.
You may have noticed I haven’t posted as much on my main Instagram account as I usually do over this past year, even though Instagram is my favorite. I quite simply wasn’t feeling inspired about my direction. What a great feeling to have some of that passion back!
It’s so easy to get caught up in trying to do what everyone wants you to do on social media. It’s exhausting, and I feel like I’ve come to a place where my goal is to just share what I love. If my posts inspire people and they choose to follow along with me, yay! But if some of my readers decide they don’t want to follow along, that’s ok too.
So what will this “Passion Project: Dawn Nicole at Home” Look Like?
Sometimes, I’ll be sharing pieces of my home with you as a decorate each space. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s to come.
P.S. I’ve been keeping a list of all the decor items, so I’ll share sources with you in each post. ?
This is our living room and kitchen. Our kitchen in Germany was teeny tiny, so a lot of my budget went into the kitchen. It indeed is the heart of the home. I love to put on music, pour a glass of white wine, and cook for my family. (Baking…not so much. I’ll leave that to the pros, ha!)
This is my home office. I shared this space and more photos/details a while back. You can see more in this post.
The master bedroom is a space that never gets any love. I usually focus on the kids. But in this house, the master is on the main floor, and all the kid’s bedrooms are upstairs. One day a few weeks ago, after I got off of video conference call with Tombow, I was randomly inspired to redo it. I’ll post all the details and before, and afters in a coming post, but here’s a little peek.
Note: I’m keeping things separate on Instagram. Here’s how to follow along:

Sometimes, I’ll share random things I love…with a lettering twist. These photos have been such a hit on Instagram; they’re part of what inspired this passion project!
This post has more rambling than I intended to do, but I hope something in my passion project will inspire you to start your own. And I hope you enjoy getting to know the “girl behind the blog” and her family a bit more too!
Up Next for Dawn Nicole at Home: My Favorite Moscow Mule
I’ll be sharing the recipe of my favorite Friday night cocktail with you…lettering style. It’s similar to how I lettered on the photos of my shoes in the pics above. I’ll also walk you through how I create the lettering and styled photo. It was such a fun project and I can’t wait to share it with you super soon!
