Spencerian Script Style
Here are few notable things I’ve learned while studying the Spencerian style.
- The slant is 52 degrees.
- The x-height is not fixed.
- It is more delicate in appearance than the Copperplate style.
- When you’re writing words and sentences, the thicker strokes are applied irregularly and don’t follow the usual “light pressure for upstrokes, heavy pressure for downstrokes rule”. I’ve read that the general guideline is to apply the thicker strokes to every 3-4 characters.

Hi, am i correct in thinking the capital I is hard press down on the upstroke??? Or do you start it backwards and do the thin up stroke from the right side and down hard on the left side?? Do you have video of you doing the letters? P>S> got your 3 pen set today at michaels….loving them. Nice dark ink, flows nice.
oops…those weren’t your pens afterall. 🙁 But they do work great for your 30 day challenge.
Hi Laura! You want to start with the upstroke and then do the downstroke. That’s how I always write a cap I in brush calligraphy but it is kind of going backward to go forwards! 🙂 I hope that makes sense!
