Getting Started
A video look at the supplies I use and recommend.
The Basic Strokes
On the upstrokes, you use light pressure and on the downstrokes, you use heavier pressure. I’ll demonstrate this in a video below.
Paper Matters
As I mentioned in the first video, using the proper paper keeps your brush tips in great condition so look for ultra-smooth paper designed for use with brush pens and markers.
My favorites are:
- Rhodia Dot Pad
- Canson Marker Paper
- Copic X-Press It Paper
- Watercolor Paper: Hot Press is smoother than Cold Press so opt for the hot press!
- Copy Paper: HP Premium Choice Laserjet Paper
Holding the Brush Pen
You can really hold your pen however it is comfortable for you, but one thing you need to do is hold it at a roughly 45-degree angle, as demonstrated in the video lesson.

Somewhere along the way I printed two worksheets entitled 50 ways to draw an A and 50 ways to draw a B. I haven’t seen any works sheets for any of the other letters and am particularly interested in the letter M. Have I missed these? Or are they still coming sometime in the future? Thank you.
Hi Patty! They go out each month in the Happy eMail newsletter. The “C” worksheet goes out tomorrow in the August email! 🙂
Glad to hear I didn’t miss them. You are very talented and creative. Love everything you share. Thank you!
Hello Nicole… I was wondering if the “F” worksheet has already been sent… Thanks!!! 🙂
Hi! Yes it went out in the October first email. 🙂 Check your spam box or “promotions” tab in gmail if you didn’t see it in your inbox. 🙂
Thanks a lot! I’ve found it. 😉
“Free”waste of my time-
The problem with the Internet is that people think just because they have an opinion, they’re entitled to say it. Freedom of Speech does not give people freedom to be unkind. It’s a right but it’s also a responsibility. Kindness Changes Everything.
One of my favorite quotes: “If you’re not kind on the Internet, then you’re not kind.” -Glennon Doyle Melton
Preach! Haters gonna hate! I guess my question is why do you click on a post entitled hand lettering worksheets if you think hand lettering worksheets are a waste of time?
I can’t decide where to start! Thank you.
Hi, I really love your work, and always download your worksheet. Sorry to ask you this, but I lost the Fifty-Ways-to-Draw-a-D file, can you please share it with me again?

Can I use pen/ nib calligraphy tools with these worksheets? I’m a beginner and want to get into calligraphy. Is the technique between brush and the pen/ ink different?
Hi Elizabeth! You can absolutely use a calligraphy pen on the practice sheets. Just print the sheet on smooth laserjet pet for best results! 🙂
Would love to practice with your advice & practice worksheets!

Thank you so much for helping me develop my skill on hand lettering.
Dear Nicole,
I would like to thank you from the deepest bottom of my heart for this hard work you put into creating these freebies. I’m a newbie to hand-lettering but I’ve loved and tried to learn calligraphy for a long time. I stumble upon your blog while searching for calligraphy template to practice and man I must say your blog is AWESOME!
I’ll gladly purchase the supplies through your link and I wish you many great things in life and great health and fortune to carry on spreading your talent in hand lettering.
Thank you so so much again!
Have a nice day! 🙂
Thank you so much for these!
I can´t print the numbre 10. I subscribe the list but it still don´t work. 🙁
But I love this Page <3
Hi Jaqueline! Once you sign up, you get an email with sign-in info for the Happy Email Club page. All of the “fifty ways” worksheets live on that password protected page under the “Fifty Ways” button. 🙂 That sign-in info appears at the bottom of every weekly Happy Email I send.
All the links on this page are broken for me (404 not found)
I noticed they all end in .html as well as having the year and month in the middle of the URL, but that doesn’t seem to be the current URL structure of your site.
If you changed your Permalink structure in WordPress, it does not automatically redirect links. It looks like all the links work if you remove the date and .html parts, so I would recommend doing a big search & replace in your site an also setting up 301 redirects for the old link structure. Feel free to email me if you want more advice on that.
Hi Kristarella! Agh, thanks for letting me know. I hired a gal to change my permalink structure and setup redirects a few months ago. It has all been working just fine up until the last 24 hours! I’m going to send her an email so she can check it out ASAP. Sorry for any inconvenience!
OMG! This is everything!. What an excellent guide for a beginner like me! Looking forward to lots of practicing and hopefully meeting my own style! Yay! <3

So much much much much thank youuu 🙂
You’re so welcome, Helza! I hope you enjoy them! 🙂
trying to get your fun with floushing free e book but keep getting 404 pages?
Hi Jazzy! That’s a super outdated one I’ve removed from the blog as it has since been replaced with much better freebies like all the custom worksheets in this blog post! 🙂
First of all, Thank You! It’s so nice of you to share these with us! I want to know, do I have to use this internet program that’s listed to download these twenty pages? I share a computer with my hubby. He does NOT like for me to sign up for things I know nothing about! I’m NOT a computer girl! Please explain how I can print these off using my computer! Again, Thank YOU so much for sharing!
You’re so welcome! No special program needed to open the worksheets. Just click the PDF download link in the blog post of any worksheet you want. When it opens in your browser, you can print it right from there. Or you can save the worksheet to your computer and print it. If you do that, you may need Adobe Reader installed to open the PDF but most computers already have that. 🙂
Hi! Really really would like to ask you something about your practice sheets… I believe kind of legal stuff? I don’t know… a permission I guess haha. Pls get in touch with me or let me know where can I reach you.
Hi Lincy, you can email me your question at [email protected]. 🙂
