Brush Calligraphy: Free A-Z Video Tutorials. Learn brush calligraphy from A to Z with free video tutorials for every letter. Perfect for beginners using brush pens or Procreate.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn brush calligraphy but didn’t know where to start, you’re in the right place.
This A–Z series breaks down every single letter into simple, approachable strokes so you can build confidence one step at a time. No guesswork, no overwhelm—just clear, guided practice that actually helps you improve.
Inside each tutorial, I’ll walk you through forming the letter, what to watch for, and how to refine your strokes so your lettering feels smooth and intentional (not shaky or stiff). Whether you’re using a brush pen or working digitally in Procreate, these lessons are designed to meet you where you are.
Start with the letter you need—or go in order and treat it like your daily practice routine.
💡 Tip: Practice slowly and focus on smooth strokes and flow rather than speed. Repeat each letter several times, then try writing it in simple words. Daily short sessions are more effective than occasional long ones for building cursive handwriting skills.

Brush Calligraphy: FAQS
What is brush calligraphy?
Brush calligraphy is a style of lettering created using pressure-based strokes: thin lines on the upstroke and thicker lines on the downstroke. It can be done with brush pens, paintbrushes, or digitally using apps like Procreate.
Is this series good for beginners?
Yes, this series is designed specifically for beginners. Each letter is broken down step by step so you can focus on one shape at a time without feeling overwhelmed.
Do I need special supplies to get started?
Not at all. You can use a basic brush pen and paper, or an iPad with Procreate and a brush lettering brush. Here are my recommendations.
- Paper: HP Premium is smooth enough to prevent damage to your brush pens.
- Brush Pens: I recommend the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pens for beginners.
- Procreate brushes: My best-seller is my classic Dawn Nicole Brush Set, ideal for iPad Calligraphy. It has 100+ five-star reviews and has been a top-seller for years. The main calligraphy pens and guides seen in the video tutorials are included in my iPad Calligraphy in Procreate online class.
Should I learn calligraphy in alphabetical order?
You can, but you don’t have to. Some letters are easier than others, so feel free to jump around. That said, working through A–Z in order can help build consistency and muscle memory. I’d recommend starting with the calligraphy drills lesson and free practice sheets.

Why do my letters look shaky or uneven?
This is completely normal in the beginning. Brush calligraphy relies on pressure control, which takes practice. Focus on slowing down, applying steady pressure on downstrokes, and lifting lightly on upstrokes.
How long does it take to get good at brush calligraphy?
Most beginners start seeing improvement within a couple of weeks of consistent practice. The key is repetition and understanding stroke structure, not perfection.
Can I learn brush calligraphy on Procreate?
Absolutely. Digital brush calligraphy follows the same principles as traditional lettering, and Procreate actually makes it easier to practice because you can undo, trace, and refine your strokes. You’ll see this in real time in the video lessons.
Where should I go after learning the alphabet?
Once you’re comfortable with individual letters, the next step is learning how to connect them into words, improve consistency, and develop your style.
If you’re ready to go deeper, I teach a full iPad Calligraphy in Procreate course that walks you through everything, tricky letter combos, dozens of practice sheets, easy and fun calligraphy animations, and more.
In my Procreate course, you won’t just learn the letters—you’ll understand how they work together, which is where the magic really happens.

How to Practice BRUSH Calligraphy Effectively
- Daily Drills. Short daily drills can build muscle memory faster and are easier to commit to than occasional long practice sessions.
- Slow Practice. Practicing slowly helps you control pressure and stroke direction, keeping your letters clean and consistent.
- Trace, then freehand. Start by tracing letters to learn their structure, then move to freehand writing to build confidence and control.
- Digital vs Paper. Digital practice allows easy undo and layering, while paper practice strengthens hand control and pressure awareness.

Calligraphy Practice FAQ
- Should I trace or practice freehand? Tracing is a great way to build muscle memory when you are first learning. Once the strokes feel familiar, switching to freehand practice helps you develop your own rhythm and style.
- Can I mix paper and digital practice? Absolutely. Practicing on paper improves hand control, while digital practice enables easy repetition and experimentation. Using both can actually help you learn faster.
- Are practice sheets really necessary for learning calligraphy? Yes. Practice sheets remove guesswork and help you focus on stroke control, spacing, and letter formation. They speed up learning and reduce frustration, especially when you are just starting out. Grab the Calligraphy Alphabet free practice sheets shown below, right here!
