Anatomy of the Letter J
The letter j brings a little drama to the alphabet. It’s one of the few letters that confidently dips below the baseline, giving it movement and personality. In lowercase, you get that signature descending stroke plus a floating dot above. In uppercase, the form is usually more restrained, built from a vertical stroke with a curved bottom and often a serifed top.

Uppercase LETTER J
- Stem: The main vertical stroke that anchors the letter to the baseline
- Serifs (optional): Small finishing strokes at the top and bottom of the uppercase stem in serif styles
- Terminal: The end of the stroke in sans serif styles, which may be flat, rounded, or slightly angled
💡Pro Tip: Let the curve dip below the baseline. It’s rounded, so a little bit of overshoot helps achieve balance.

LOWERCASE LETTER J
- Stem: The main vertical stroke that anchors the letter to the baseline
- Tittle: The small dot above the lowercase i (and j). Yes, it has an official name, and yes, lettering nerds love that.
- Descender: The main stroke that drops below the baseline
- Tail/hook: The curved bottom portion that often sweeps to the left
- Serifs (optional): Small finishing strokes at the top and bottom of the uppercase stem in serif styles
- Terminal: The end of the stroke in sans serif styles, which may be flat, rounded, or slightly angled
💡Pro Tip: Align the dot with the stem, not the descender curve
Noteworthy
Because the lowercase j combines a descender and a detached dot, spacing becomes extra important. The curve of the tail, the weight of the stroke, and the placement of the tittle all work together to give this letter its distinct, slightly playful feel.
