Anatomy of the Letter U
The letter U is all about smooth curves and open space. Both uppercase and lowercase forms feel soft and rounded, but they’re built a little differently. The uppercase U is one continuous curve from top to bottom, while the lowercase u combines a rounded shape with a straight stroke on the right.

Uppercase LETTER U
The uppercase U is a wide, flowing shape that moves from top to bottom in one continuous stroke.
- Stems/Sides: The vertical portions on the left and right that extend down from the cap height.
- Bowl (Bottom Curve): The rounded base where the two sides connect.
- Counter: The open white space inside the curve.
- Terminal: The endpoints of the stroke.
- Serifs (optional): Small finishing strokes at the end of a stem in serif styles.
💡Pro Tip: The curve at the bottom is key. Too flat and it feels stiff, too round and it can look heavy. Finding that balance makes all the difference.

LowerCase LETTER U
The lowercase u keeps the same general shape but breaks it into two parts.
- Bowl: The curved stroke on the left that sits on the baseline and rises to the x-height.
- Stem: The straight vertical stroke on the right.
- Counter: The open white space inside the curve.
- Terminal: The finishing end of the stroke on the right, which may be simple, curved, or serifed.
- Serifs (optional): Small finishing strokes at the base of the stem or the end of the shoulder in serif styles.
💡Pro Tip: Because the lowercase u mixes a curve with a straight line, it’s a great letter for practicing consistency. Matching the height, curve tension, and spacing will help your lettering feel more polished and even.
