Block Letter A: How to Draw It (+ Free Worksheet)
If you’re just getting started with block lettering, the letter A is the perfect place to begin.
It’s made up of simple diagonal strokes and one horizontal bar, which makes it a great introduction to structure, balance, and clean lines. Once you understand how to build a strong block letter A, you’ll start to see how similar shapes show up in other letters, too.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through exactly how to draw a block letter A step-by-step, whether you’re working on paper or in Procreate.
What Is a Block Letter A?
A block letter A is a clean, structured version of the letter made using straight lines and consistent stroke widths.
Instead of focusing on thick and thin strokes like calligraphy, block lettering is all about:
- Even spacing
- Balanced proportions
- Simple geometric shapes
Think of it as building the letter using lines and angles rather than writing it.

How to Draw a Block Letter A (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Draw the Letter Frame
Think of it like a stick letter. Keep this part sketchy and simple.
Step 2: Add Weight to the Letter
Now, turn your outline into a block letter by adding thickness to each stroke. Keep the width consistent all the way around.
Step 3: Add Dimension (Optional)
Imagine you have a sun in one corner. Add dimension to the shadowy side.
Step 4: Refine and Add Color
Erase any sketch lines and refine the edges so everything looks crisp and even. Add color and details.
Tips for Better Block Letters
- Keep your spacing consistent – uneven gaps can make the letter feel off-balance
- Watch your angles – symmetrical diagonals make a big difference
- Use guidelines – especially when you’re starting out
- Go slow – clean lines matter more than speed
