How to Draw BLOCK Letters: FAQs
What is block lettering?
Block lettering is a simple, structured lettering style characterized by clean lines and basic shapes. Unlike cursive or calligraphy, each letter stands on its own, making it one of the easiest and most beginner-friendly styles to learn.
Is block lettering good for beginners?
Yes, this is the best place to start. Block letters help you understand spacing, proportions, and letter construction without worrying about brush pressure or fancy strokes. Another easy one that’s based on block letters is my Playful Bubble Letters Series.
Do I need special tools?
Nope. You can get started with just a pencil and paper. If you’re working digitally, I recommend using Procreate with a simple monoline brush, but anything you’re comfortable with will work.
Can I use this in Procreate on my iPad?
Absolutely. Every letter in this series works perfectly in Procreate. You can follow along using a monoline brush for clean, even strokes. The downloads will include a Printable PDF and a Procreate file.
Are there worksheets for each letter?
Yes! Every letter in the series will include a free downloadable worksheet to help you practice tracing and drawing on your own.
How long does it take to learn block lettering?
You can start seeing improvement in just a few practice sessions. Since each letter builds on simple shapes, most people feel comfortable pretty quickly, especially if you work through the series consistently.
What’s the difference between block lettering and calligraphy?
Block lettering focuses on uniform strokes and structure, while calligraphy (like brush lettering) uses thick and thin lines created by pressure. Think of block lettering as the foundation, and calligraphy as the next step.
Should I go in order from A to Z?
You can, but you don’t have to. If you’re brand new, starting with A–E is helpful. Otherwise, feel free to jump to the letters you use most.
Can I turn block letters into my own style?
Yes, and you should! Once you understand the basic structure, you can start experimenting with spacing, proportions, and details to make the letters your own.
