Anatomy of the Letter H
The letter H is all about structure and balance. In uppercase, you build it from two strong vertical stems connected by a horizontal crossbar. In lowercase, that structure softens into a tall stem with a curved shoulder. Either way, H leans heavily into vertical lines, which makes spacing and proportion especially important in your lettering.

Uppercase LETTER H
The uppercase H is clean and architectural. It relies on symmetry and even spacing to feel stable.
- Stem: The two vertical strokes that form the backbone of the letter
- Crossbar: The horizontal stroke that connects the stems, usually placed at the visual center
- Serifs (optional): Small finishing strokes at the tops and bottoms of the stems in serif styles
- Terminals: Clean stroke endings in sans serif versions
Because the structure is so simple, even small shifts in crossbar placement or stem weight can change the personality of the letter.
💡Pro Tip: The crossbar usually sits just below the optical center.

LOWERCASE LETTER G
The lowercase h maintains a strong vertical presence while adding movement with a curved stroke.
- Stem: The tall vertical line on the left
- Ascender: The portion of the stem that rises above the x-height
- Shoulder: The curved stroke that arches from the stem and moves down to the right
- Open counter: The white space tucked underneath the shoulder/
- Serifs (optional): Small finishing strokes at the tops and bottoms of the stems in serif styles
- Terminals: Clean stroke endings in sans serif versions
💡Pro Tip: Make the shoulder start with a curve, not a corner. Hard joints feel mechanical.
Noteworthy
Uppercase H trains your eye for alignment and symmetry. Lowercase h helps you practice smooth shoulder curves and consistent spacing. Together, they’re a great exercise in balancing structure with flow.
