Anatomy of the Letter X
The letter X is built from two diagonal strokes that cross at the center. It’s simple on the surface, but getting it to feel balanced takes a little more intention than you’d think. Because everything hinges on that intersection point, even small shifts in angle or placement can throw the whole letter off.

Uppercase LETTER X
The uppercase X is bold, symmetrical, and centered within the cap height.
- Strokes/Diagonals: Two diagonal lines that cross from corner to corner.
- Intersection (Crossing Point): The center point where the two strokes meet.
- Terminal: The endpoints of the stroke.
- Serifs (optional): Small finishing strokes at the end of a stem/stroke in serif styles.
💡Pro Tip: In many typefaces, the strokes aren’t perfectly identical. One diagonal may be slightly thicker or slightly “off-line” to create better visual balance.

LowerCase LETTER X
The lowercase x follows the same structure, just scaled to the x-height.
💡Pro Tip: Because X is all diagonals and one central crossing, it’s a great letter for practicing precision. Nail the angles and the center point, and the whole letter snaps into place.
What to Watch for:
- Centering: The intersection should feel visually centered, not just mathematically centered.
- Angle consistency: Both diagonals should feel intentional and balanced.
- Stroke Width: Slight variation in thickness can help the letter feel more stable.
