Nostalgic ’90s-Inspired Notebook Lettering. Follow along as I show you how to create this playful retro lettering style in a step-by-step Procreate video lesson.

Nostalgic ’90s-Inspired Notebook Lettering
I made this playful lettering piece last week, but it could totally have come right out of my 1997 high school notebook, when I was listening to “Semi-Charmed Life” on repeat and doodling on all my paper-bag textbook covers.
This style is all about playful retro charm with a fun, sticker-inspired twist.
Think bold, chunky letterforms, happy colors, and a layered cut-paper look that feels straight out of a vintage notebook or scrapbook. Paired with whimsical doodles like hearts, stars, and music notes, this style is cheerful, nostalgic, and full of personality.
It’s perfect for feel-good quotes, planners, classroom prints, and anywhere you want your lettering to feel upbeat, nostalgic, and motivational.
For this project, I’ll be using the Bibliophile Lettering Style from my latest book, as shown below, but you can use any block lettering style you wish. This lesson is trace-to-learn style, so you can use my version to learn from (keep scrolling to download it below).
What You’ll Need
- iPad, Apple Pencil, Procreate App
- Project Template (Procreate file format. Download for free below)
- Optional: Hey You Color Palette (Most of the colors I’m using come from this palette)
This project features the Bibliophile Lettering Style (from my Bibliophile Coloring & Lettering Book). The letters you’ll need for this project are included in the template below, but you can grab a copy of my book if you want the whole alphabet (plus nine more lettering styles)! 😉
