What Are Bubble Letters?
Bubble letters are a rounded, puffy lettering style in which each letter is drawn with soft curves and thick outlines, giving it an inflated, “balloon-like” appearance. Unlike block letters, which use straight lines and sharp corners, bubble letters are rounded, playful, and full of personality.
They’re one of the most popular beginner lettering styles because they’re simple to build and easy to customize. If you can draw basic block letters, you can learn how to draw bubble letters by rounding the corners and thickening the shape.

How to Draw Bubble Letters: FAQs
Bubble vs block: What’s the difference?
Think of block letters as the foundation: straight lines, clean corners, very structured. Bubble letters are what happen when you take those block letters and soften everything. You round the corners, thicken the lines, and give the letter a puffy outline. If you struggle with consistency, try starting with block letters first, then “inflating” them into bubble letters. It makes the proportions way easier to control and keeps everything looking balanced.
How do you add shading to bubble letters?
Shading is what makes them go from flat to fabulous. The simplest method:
- Pick a light source (I usually imagine it coming from the top right).
- Add a shadow along the opposite side of each letter.
- Fill that shadow area with a slightly darker version of your base color.
- Add a tiny white highlight near the top curve for that glossy, bubble look.
- Because bubble letters are rounded, your shading should follow the curves. Keep them soft and smooth, not harsh and blocky. Even a basic drop shadow behind the letter can instantly add depth.
How do you color bubble letters?
This is the fun part. You can keep it simple with a single bold color, or go all in with gradients, patterns, sparkles, or outlines.
If you’re just starting out, here’s my go-to formula:
- Draw the outline.
- Fill the letter with a base color.
- Add a drop shadow.
- Draw in some simple highlights.
- Add playful details and doodles.
High playfulness = high impact. Don’t be afraid to go bold!
