Anatomy of the Letter Q
The letter Q starts with the same circular foundation as the letter O, but adds one extra detail that makes it stand out: a tail. That single stroke changes everything. In uppercase, the tail usually slices across the bottom right of the bowl. In lowercase, the letter flips direction and grows a long descender on the right.

Uppercase LETTER Q
The uppercase Q begins with a round bowl and adds a distinctive tail.
- Bowl: The fully closed, rounded, circular structure that encloses the white space.
- Counter (closed): The fully enclosed white space inside the bowl.
- Tail/Leg: A short stroke that extends from the lower right of the bowl. In many styles, it cuts diagonally across the bowl, though some serif fonts let it dip slightly below the baseline.
💡Pro Tip: Because the Q is basically an O with an extra stroke, the placement and angle of the tail have a big impact on the personality of the letter.

LowerCase LETTER Q
The lowercase q flips the construction around. Instead of adding a small tail, it grows a full descender.
- Stem (descender): The vertical stroke on the right that drops below the baseline
- Bowl: The rounded shape on the left, similar to a lowercase p.
- Counter (closed): The fully enclosed white space inside the bowl.
- Terminal: The end of the stroke in sans serif styles, which may be flat, rounded, or slightly angled.
- Serifs (optional): Small finishing strokes at the tops and bottoms of the stems in serif styles.
💡Pro Tip: Because the lowercase q includes a descender, spacing becomes more important when it appears in words. That extra length below the baseline adds rhythm and movement to your lettering.
Since Q is built from the same circular shape as O, mastering your bowls will make drawing a strong Q much easier. The tail is just the finishing touch.
