Anatomy of the Letter Z
The letter Z is all about sharp direction changes. It’s built from two horizontal strokes connected by a diagonal, giving it that bold zig-zag shape. There are no curves here, just clean angles and strong lines, which means alignment and consistency really matter.

Uppercase LETTER Z
The uppercase Z is structured and geometric, stretching from cap height to baseline.
- Top/Bottom Bar: The horizontal strokes at the top and bottom of the letter
- Diagonal/Spine: The angled stroke that connects the top and bottom bars.
- Terminal: The endpoints of the stroke.
- Serifs (optional): Small finishing strokes at the end of a stem/stroke in serif styles.
💡Pro Tip: Because the diagonal carries all the movement, its angle plays a huge role in how the letter feels. Too steep or too shallow, and it throws off the balance.

LowerCase LETTER Z
The lowercase z follows the same basic construction, just scaled down to the x-height.
What to Watch for:
- Angle consistency: The diagonal should feel intentional and match the style of your other angled letters
- Alignment: Keep the top and bottom bars parallel for a clean, structured look
- Spacing: Because Z is so open, uneven spacing stands out quickly
Z may look simple, but it’s a great letter for practicing precision. Clean lines, consistent angles, and sharp corners will make it feel strong instead of awkward.
