Sunflowers are one of the happiest flowers to draw, with their bright petals, bold centers, and unmistakable shape. While they may look detailed at first glance, creating an easy sunflower drawing is much simpler when you break the flower down into a few basic shapes and build it step by step.
In this beginner-friendly Procreate tutorial, I’ll show you how to draw a sunflower in 4 different styles: basic (with a twist), cutesy, folksy, and stained glass-inspired. Each sunflower has its own unique look and personality, making this a fun way to experiment with different brushes, textures, and illustration styles while building your floral drawing skills.
Whether you’re looking for simple sunflower drawing ideas, practicing digital flower illustrations, or just wanting a relaxing, creative project, these easy sunflower drawings are a great place to start.

Tips for Drawing SUNFLOWERS
Sunflowers are a fun and beginner-friendly flower to draw because they’re made up of simple shapes that can be customized in endless ways. Whether you’re creating a realistic bloom or a playful folk art version, these tips will help your sunflower drawings shine.
Start with a Large Center Circle
The center of the sunflower is its most recognizable feature. Drawing a large circle first gives you an anchor point for arranging the petals and helps keep your flower balanced.
Sketch Petals in Layers
Sunflower petals often overlap and appear in multiple rows. Instead of drawing a single ring of petals, try adding a second layer behind the first to create more depth and dimension.
Vary the Petal Lengths
Real sunflower petals aren’t all the same size. Mixing shorter and longer petals can make your flower look more natural and less rigid.
Don’t Make It Perfectly Symmetrical
Sunflowers have a cheerful, organic look. Allowing petals to bend, curve, or sit at slightly different angles will give your drawing more character.
Add Texture to the Center
The center of a sunflower is packed with seeds, making it a great place to add visual interest. Try using dots, tiny circles, stippling, or decorative patterns depending on your drawing style.
Experiment with Different Color Palettes
Traditional yellow petals are always beautiful, but sunflowers also look great in orange, peach, pink, cream, or even whimsical rainbow color schemes.
Use Bold Stems and Leaves
Sunflowers have thick stems and large leaves that help balance the oversized flower head. Adding these elements can make your composition feel more complete.
Try Different Artistic Styles
Once you’ve mastered a basic sunflower shape, experiment with cutesy, folksy, watercolor, or stained glass-inspired versions. Drawing the same flower in different styles is a great way to build confidence and discover new creative techniques.
Let the Flower Fill the Canvas
Sunflowers are naturally bold and dramatic. Don’t be afraid to make them large and let the petals extend toward the edges of your canvas for a more eye-catching design.
Easy SUNFLOWER Drawing FAQs
How do you draw a simple sunflower for beginners?
The easiest way to draw a sunflower is to start with a large circle for the center, then add pointed petals all around it. Once you have the basic flower shape, you can add a stem, leaves, and color to complete your drawing.
What is the easiest flower to draw?
Daisies are often considered one of the easiest flowers to draw because they use simple shapes and don’t require complicated layering. Their straightforward structure makes them perfect for beginners.
Can I draw sunflowers in Procreate as a beginner?
Absolutely! Procreate is a great tool for beginner flower drawings. You can use layers to sketch, ink, color, and experiment with different styles while easily correcting mistakes along the way.
What brushes work best for drawing sunflowers in Procreate?
The best brush depends on the style you’re creating. Monoline brushes are great for clean outlines, watercolor brushes create soft painted effects, and textured brushes can add extra personality to your illustrations.
How do I make my sunflower drawing look more realistic?
To create a more realistic flower, vary the size and direction of your petals, add subtle shading, and include overlapping petals. Small details in the flower center can also help add depth and dimension.
What colors can sunflowers be?
While yellow petals with brown centers are the most recognizable, feel free to experiment with different color palettes to create your own unique designs. If you’re going for an artsy or whimsical look, I like to use unexpected colors!
Why do my sunflower petals look uneven?
Uneven petals are completely normal and often make your flower look more natural. Real flowers aren’t perfectly symmetrical, so slight variations can actually improve the overall appearance of your drawing.
How can I make my flower drawing more decorative?
Try adding patterned petals, playful doodles, decorative centers, hearts, dots, leaves, or folk art-inspired details. Drawing the same flower in different styles is a fun way to develop your creativity and illustration skills.
What can I do with my finished sunflower drawings?
Finished flower illustrations can be used for greeting cards, stickers, digital planners, social media graphics, wall art, scrapbooking projects, or personal creative practice. They’re also perfect for creating repeating floral patterns.
What flowers should I draw after learning sunflowers?
Once you’ve mastered these, try drawing other beginner-friendly flowers like roses, daisies, tulips, sunflowers, lavender, or cherry blossoms. Each flower teaches different techniques while helping you build confidence as an artist. I’ll be sharing tutorials for all of these over the coming months as part of my “Flower Fridays” series.
