What Is the Phonetic Alphabet?
The NATO phonetic alphabet is a standardized system that assigns a unique word to each letter of the alphabet. For example, A becomes Alpha, B becomes Bravo, and Z becomes Zulu. It was developed to make spoken communication clearer and reduce misunderstandings when spelling words over radios, telephones, and other communication systems.
Today, the phonetic alphabet is used by military organizations, pilots, emergency responders, and businesses around the world. Because each word is distinct and easy to understand, it helps ensure that important information is communicated accurately, even in noisy environments or when speakers have different accents.
