Tips for Drawing Lilies
Lilies may look intricate, but they’re surprisingly easy to draw when you break them down into simple shapes. Their long petals, graceful curves, and decorative details also make them a fun flower to customize in your own drawing style.
Here are a few tips for drawing beautiful lilies:
- Start with the center of the flower. Use a small circle or a few simple guidelines to help you arrange the petals evenly around the center.
- Think in groups of six. Lilies typically have six petal-like segments. Draw them radiating outward from the center, allowing some to overlap for a more natural look.
- Make the petals long and curved. Lily petals often curve outward and slightly backward. Avoid making every petal exactly the same shape or size.
- Add prominent stamens. The long stamens extending from the center are one of the most recognizable features of a lily. Add small oval or rounded shapes to the tips.
- Use narrow, pointed leaves. Lily leaves are generally long and slender. Arrange them along the stem at slightly different angles to create movement.
- Add spots and decorative details. Many lilies have freckles, dots, stripes, or contrasting colors near the center of their petals. These small details can make even a simple drawing more interesting.
- Experiment with color and gradients. Try white, pink, orange, yellow, red, purple, or peach. Adding a darker or brighter color toward the center of the petals can create beautiful depth.
- Have fun with the style. Once you understand the basic lily shape, try rounded petals for a cutesy look, decorative patterns for a folksy version, or bold outlines and divided color sections for a stained-glass effect.
With a few flowing petals and simple details, you can create all kinds of lilies, from clean and beginner-friendly flowers to colorful, decorative illustrations.
Easy Lily Drawing FAQs
How do you draw a simple lily for beginners?
To draw a simple lily, start with a small center and add six long, curved petals radiating outward. Give each petal a slightly pointed tip and vary the curves to make the flower look more natural. Next, add a few long stamens extending from the center, then draw a curved stem and narrow leaves. Finish your lily with simple details like lines, dots, or spots on the petals and add color if you’d like.
What is the easiest flower to draw?
Daisies are often considered one of the easiest flowers to draw because they use simple shapes and don’t require complicated layering. Their straightforward structure makes them perfect for beginners.
Can I draw lilies in Procreate as a beginner?
Absolutely! Procreate is a great tool for beginner flower drawings. You can use layers to sketch, ink, color, and experiment with different styles while easily correcting mistakes along the way.
What brushes work best for drawing lilies in Procreate?
The best brush depends on the style you’re creating. Monoline brushes are great for clean outlines, watercolor brushes create soft painted effects, and textured brushes can add extra personality to your tulip illustrations.
How do I make my lily drawing look more realistic?
To create a more realistic lily, vary the size and direction of your petals, add subtle shading, and include overlapping petals. Small details in the flower center can also help add depth and dimension.
What colors can lilies be?
Lilies come in a beautiful range of colors, including white, pink, yellow, orange, red, purple, peach, and cream. Wide varieties feature multiple colors, freckles, spots, contrasting centers, or darker edges on their petals. When drawing lilies, you can use realistic colors inspired by nature or experiment with playful combinations, soft gradients, and unexpected shades to create a more whimsical illustration.
Why do my lily petals look uneven?
Uneven petals are completely normal and often make your flower look more natural. Real flowers aren’t perfectly symmetrical, so slight variations can actually improve the overall appearance of your drawing.
How can I make my lily drawing more decorative?
Try adding patterned petals, playful doodles, decorative centers, hearts, dots, leaves, or folk art-inspired details. Drawing the same flower in different styles is a fun way to develop your creativity and illustration skills.
What can I do with my finished drawings?
Finished illustrations can be used for greeting cards, stickers, digital planners, social media graphics, wall art, scrapbooking projects, or personal creative practice. They’re also perfect for creating repeating floral patterns.
What flowers should I draw after learning lilies?
Once you’ve mastered these, try drawing other beginner-friendly flowers like roses, daisies, sunflowers, tulips, lavender, or cherry blossoms. Each flower teaches different techniques while helping you build confidence as an artist. I’ll be sharing tutorials for all of these over the coming months as part of my “Flower Fridays” series.
