Calligraphy E: Uppercase & Lowercase (Video Tutorial)
If you’ve been practicing brush calligraphy, the letter E is a great one to work on next.
Each letter brings its own challenges, and repetitive practice helps you build control, practice curves, transitions, and consistency. Once this one clicks, you’ll start to notice improvement across your lettering as a whole.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through both uppercase and lowercase, step by step, so you can practice with intention (and actually see progress).
Brush Calligraphy Basics
Before we start, remember the two rules that make brush calligraphy work:
- Upstrokes = light pressure (thin lines)
- Downstrokes = heavy pressure (thick lines)
Everything we’re about to do is built on that contrast.

What to watch for
- A common mistake is making strokes feel too stiff. Try to keep everything fluid.
- Make sure your thick downstroke is actually thick (don’t be shy with pressure)!
- Try not to rush—smooth > fast.
Practice Tips for a Better “E”
“E” is deceptively simple—but it’s one of the best letters for refining control and spacing. It shows you real quick if your pressure and curves are working together (or fighting each other 😅).
Think “loop + curve” (lowercase). A lowercase “e” usually starts with a small entry loop, then opens into a curve. If it looks off, it’s often the loop causing the issue, not the whole letter.
Keep the loop small and controlled. Oversized loops can make your “e” look messy or childish. Aim for a tight, clean loop that flows right into the curve.
- Don’t close it too much. If your “e” closes up, it starts looking like an “o.” Keep that opening clear and intentional.
Focus on smooth transitions. The shift from loop → curve → exit stroke should feel continuous. If it looks choppy, slow down and lighten your hand.
Watch your pressure placement. Light as you enter the loop, slight pressure through the curve, and light again on the exit. Avoid making the whole letter thick; it loses that calligraphy contrast.
- Uppercase “E” = structure + softness. It has more form, but don’t make it stiff. Slight curves or gentle pressure variations can make it feel more modern and fluid.
Keep your horizontals balanced (uppercase). The top, middle, and bottom strokes should feel intentional. not uneven or random in length.
Practice Words with “E”
These will help you get comfortable with flow and connections:
- end
- ever
- easy
- elegant
- energy
Common Mistakes
- Pressing too hard on every stroke (you’ll lose contrast).
- Uneven shapes.
- Rushing through the letter instead of building it intentionally.
💡Extra Tip (Quick Fix)
If your “e” keeps looking weird, practice just this motion:
- small loop → open curve
Over and over. It’s a tiny letter, but once it clicks, your whole alphabet starts to feel smoother.

FAQ: Calligraphy Letter E
How do you write calligraphy E?
A calligraphy E is created using a combination of thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes, following the natural flow of brush lettering. Watch the video lesson for more precise instruction on this letter.
Why is my letter uneven?
This usually comes down to inconsistent pressure or rushing your strokes. Slowing down and focusing on control will make a big difference.
Is it hard to learn calligraphy?
Some letters are trickier than others, but with step-by-step practice, they all become much easier over time.
Can I practice this in Procreate?
Yes, these same techniques apply to digital brush calligraphy, and Procreate is a great tool for practicing and refining your strokes.
