Each letter brings its own challenges, and repetitive practice helps you build control, practice curves, transitions, and consistency. Once this one clicks, you’ll start to notice improvement across your lettering as a whole.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through both uppercase and lowercase, step by step, so you can practice with intention (and actually see progress).

Before we start, remember the two rules that make brush calligraphy work:
- Upstrokes = light pressure (thin lines)
- Downstrokes = heavy pressure (thick lines)

What to watch for
- A common mistake is making strokes feel too stiff. Try to keep everything fluid.
- Make sure your thick downstroke is actually thick (don’t be shy with pressure)!
- Try not to rush—smooth > fast.
Practice Tips for a Better “H”
“H” is where rhythm really starts to show up in your lettering. It’s all about contrast + connection—a strong stem paired with a smooth, controlled arch.
Nail the first downstroke. Your vertical stem sets the tone: Thick, steady pressure. Clean and confident. If this stroke wobbles, the whole letter feels off.
Light up, heavy down (always). When you move into the arch: Light pressure on the upstroke, press into the downstroke on the second stem. That contrast is what gives “h” its calligraphy look.
Keep the arch rounded, not pointy. A sharp arch makes your “h” feel stiff. Think soft, smooth curve, like a stretched-out “n.”
Watch your spacing between stems. Too close = cramped. Too far = disconnected. Aim for a natural, balanced gap.
Mind your ascender height (lowercase). The first stem should rise above your x-height and match letters like “b,” “d,” and “l.”
- Don’t rush the transition into the arch. This is where most wobbles happen. Slow down as you curve over the top.
- Keep your second downstroke consistent. It should match the thickness and style of your first stem, not lighter or uneven.

Common Mistakes
- Pressing too hard on every stroke (you’ll lose contrast).
- Uneven shapes.
- Rushing through the letter instead of building it intentionally.

Practice this motion repeatedly: downstroke → upstroke → arch → downstroke
It’s the foundation of not just “h,” but also letters like “n” and “m.”
Once “h” clicks, your lettering will start to feel more fluid and connected overall.
