Calligraphy Z: Uppercase & Lowercase (Video Tutorial)
If you’ve been practicing brush calligraphy, the letter Z is a great next letter to work on.
Each letter brings its own challenges, and repetitive practice helps you build control, practice curves, transitions, and consistency. Once this one clicks, you’ll start to notice improvement across your lettering as a whole.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through both uppercase and lowercase, step by step, so you can practice with intention (and actually see progress).
Brush Calligraphy Basics
Before we start, remember the two rules that make brush calligraphy work:
- Upstrokes = light pressure (thin lines)
- Downstrokes = heavy pressure (thick lines)
Everything we’re about to do is built on that contrast.

What to watch for
- A common mistake is making strokes feel too stiff. Try to keep everything fluid.
- Make sure your thick downstroke is actually thick (don’t be shy with pressure)!
- Try not to rush—smoothness> speed.
Practice Tips for a Better “Z”
“Z” is the final letter of the alphabet, and it’s a fun one because it combines angles, curves, and movement all in a single shape. It can be a little tricky at first, but once you find a rhythm that works for you, it becomes a great letter for adding personality to your calligraphy.
- Think of it as a flowing motion, not a printed letter. Many beginners try to draw a block-style “z.” Instead, focus on creating a smooth, continuous shape that feels like it belongs with the rest of your calligraphy alphabet.
- Start with a light entry stroke. Keep the beginning of your “z” soft and controlled: Thin upstroke. Gentle curve. Relaxed hand pressure
- Watch the diagonal transition. The center section is where most people struggle. Keep it smooth. Avoid abrupt direction changes. Let the stroke flow naturally into the lower portion
- Use strong contrast in your pressure. A beautiful calligraphy “z” relies on light upstrokes, thick downstrokes, and smooth transitions between the two. Avoid making every stroke the same weight.
- Don’t overcomplicate the lower curve. A simple, clean finish usually looks better than an oversized flourish.
- Keep your proportions balanced. If the top portion is too small or the bottom is too large, the letter can feel unstable.
- Uppercase “Z” = confident and bold. Think: Strong top stroke. Clean diagonal. Balanced lower stroke. You can soften the angles slightly to make it feel more calligraphic.
PRACTICE WORDS WITH “Z”
These help you get comfortable with the unique shape of the letter:
- zoo
- zero
- zest
- zigzag
- zenith
Common Mistakes
- Pressing too hard on every stroke (you’ll lose contrast).
- Uneven shapes.
- Rushing through the letter instead of building it intentionally.
💡Extra Tip (a great “Z’ drill)
Practice this motion repeatedly:
- entry stroke → diagonal transition → lower curve
Focus on making the middle transition feel smooth rather than forcing the shape.
A clean transition is usually what separates an awkward “z” from a beautiful one.

FAQ: Calligraphy Letter Z
How do you write the calligraphy Z?
A calligraphy Z is created by combining thin upstrokes with thick downstrokes, following the natural flow of brush lettering. Watch the video lesson for more precise instruction on this letter.
Why is my letter uneven?
This usually comes down to inconsistent pressure or rushing your strokes. Slowing down and focusing on control will make a big difference.
Is it hard to learn calligraphy?
Some letters are trickier than others, but with step-by-step practice, they all become much easier over time.
Can I practice this in Procreate?
Yes, these same techniques apply to digital brush calligraphy, and Procreate is a great tool for practicing and refining your strokes.
