• What Do I Need for this Class? You’ll need an iPad, Apple Pencil, and the Procreate App. Everything else you’ll need is included in your class downloads.
• Can I watch it anytime? Yes! The class is pre-recorded and available to watch at your convenience. You have lifetime access.
• Is it okay if I’m new to Procreate and/or Calligraphy? Yes, you are the intended audience for this class. We’ll take things step-by-step. I love project-based learning because it makes things more fun and easier to understand.

What to watch for

• A common mistake is making strokes feel too stiff. Try to keep everything fluid.
• Make sure your thick downstroke is actually thick (don’t be shy with pressure)!
• Try not to rush—smooth > fast.

Practice Tips for a Better “J”

“J” is where you really start to lean into movement and flow. It’s got that long stroke and a curve that can feel either super elegant…or a little chaotic if your control isn’t there yet.

• Start light, then press into the curve. A good “j” has that signature contrast: Light upstroke at the top. Heavy pressure as you curve down. Light again as you finish. That pressure shift is what makes it feel like calligraphy.

• Let the descender curve naturally. Don’t force a sharp hook at the bottom. Think: smooth, flowing curve, almost like a stretched-out “u” shape.

• Keep the tail controlled and not oversized. It’s easy to overdo the bottom loop or curve. Keep it proportional and balanced with your other descenders (like “g” and “y”).

• Watch your tittle/dot placement. Just like with “i”: Center it over the stem. Keep it consistent in size. Don’t place it too far away

• Mind your descender length. Your “j” should dip below the baseline, but not dramatically more than your other letters. Consistency matters more than drama here.

• Uppercase “J” = controlled curve. It’s usually a larger, more dramatic stroke: Start light. Curve into a heavier downstroke. Finish with a soft hook or tail. Avoid making it too stiff or angular.

• Slow down the bottom curve. This is where most wobbles happen. Take your time through the turn.

• just
• joy
• jump
• jolly
• journey

Common Mistakes

• Pressing too hard on every stroke (you’ll lose contrast).
• Uneven shapes.
• Rushing through the letter instead of building it intentionally.

💡Extra Tip (THIS ONE CLICKS FAST!)

Practice this motion repeatedly:

• light entry → downstroke → curve → exit

Don’t even worry about the dot at first—just get the movement smooth.

“J” adds a lot of personality to your lettering, especially once you get comfortable with that flowing tail.

How do you write calligraphy J?
