Calligraphy F: Uppercase & Lowercase (Video Tutorial)
If you’ve been practicing brush calligraphy, the letter F is a great one to work on next.
Each letter brings its own challenges, and repetitive practice helps you build control, practice curves, transitions, and consistency. Once this one clicks, you’ll start to notice improvement across your lettering as a whole.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through both uppercase and lowercase, step by step, so you can practice with intention (and actually see progress).
Brush Calligraphy Basics
Before we start, remember the two rules that make brush calligraphy work:
- Upstrokes = light pressure (thin lines)
- Downstrokes = heavy pressure (thick lines)
Everything we’re about to do is built on that contrast.

What to watch for
- A common mistake is making strokes feel too stiff. Try to keep everything fluid.
- Make sure your thick downstroke is actually thick (don’t be shy with pressure)!
- Try not to rush—smooth > fast.
Practice Tips for a Better “F”
“F” is where things start to feel a little more stylized—it’s less about repetition and more about structure + personality. It can look elegant or awkward really fast, depending on your proportions.
Build it from the stem first. Start with a strong vertical downstroke: Heavy, steady pressure. Clean and controlled. This is your anchor; everything else depends on it.
Keep your crossbars intentional. The top and middle strokes (especially in uppercase) should feel balanced: Top bar = slightly longer. Middle bar = shorter and centered. If they’re uneven, the whole letter feels off.
Don’t overdo the flourish (lowercase). A lowercase “f” often has loops, but it’s easy to go overboard. Keep your loops: smooth, proportional, and not overly wide.
Watch your ascender height (lowercase). The “f” usually reaches above your x-height. Make sure it’s tall enough to feel consistent with letters like “b,” “d,” and “l.”
Control your loop pressure. If your loops are all thick, you lose that calligraphy contrast. Keep: Upstrokes = light and Down curves = heavier.
- Mind your spacing. “F” can feel wide if the crossbars or loops stretch too far. Keep everything centered around the stem.
Let it have a little personality. This is one of those letters where a slight curve or flourish can really shine, just keep it intentional, not accidental.
Practice Words with “F”
These will help you explore different connections and flows:
- for
- fun
- fast
- flow
- focus
Common Mistakes
- Pressing too hard on every stroke (you’ll lose contrast).
- Uneven shapes.
- Rushing through the letter instead of building it intentionally.
💡Extra Tip (This One Helps a Lot)
If your “f” feels messy, isolate just the loop motion and practice it repeatedly. Once the loop is smooth, adding the stem and cross-stroke becomes much easier.
“F” is a little more expressive than the letters before it—so don’t be afraid to experiment once you’ve got the basics down.

FAQ: Calligraphy Letter F
How do you write calligraphy F?
A calligraphy F is created using a combination of thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes, following the natural flow of brush lettering. Watch the video lesson for more precise instruction on this letter.
Why is my letter uneven?
This usually comes down to inconsistent pressure or rushing your strokes. Slowing down and focusing on control will make a big difference.
Is it hard to learn calligraphy?
Some letters are trickier than others, but with step-by-step practice, they all become much easier over time.
Can I practice this in Procreate?
Yes, these same techniques apply to digital brush calligraphy, and Procreate is a great tool for practicing and refining your strokes.
